Mayors: Gun ruling won't stop prevention efforts
July 5, 2008WASHINGTON -- Washington's blanket ban on handguns will fall and tight gun laws in places like Chicago and San Francisco are sure to come under attack. But most of the nation's firearms regulations will probably stay on the books, and some politicians said Thursday's Supreme Court decision won't hinder their efforts to prevent bloodshed.
Analysis: Some answers, more questions in gun case
July 5, 2008WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court embraced a personal right under the Constitution to have guns for self-defense. But in its historic examination of the Second Amendment, the justices left unanswered whether gun rights extend beyond the home or how far.
Supreme Court Rejects Controversial Campaign Finance Provision
July 5, 2008Debbie Wilgoren and Robert Barnes report online: The Supreme Court today narrowly overturned a controversial provision of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance legislation, ruling that it is unconstitutional to allow candidates to accept larger-than-normal contributions if their opponents use their own fortunes to finance election bids. Writing for the majority in the 5 to 4 decision, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. said the provision -- known as the "Millionaire's Amendment" -- imposes "an unprecedented penalty on any candidate who robustly exercises" his or her First Amendment right to self-finance a campaign. Alito was joined in his opinion by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Anthony M. Kennedy, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. Justices John Paul Stevens, David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer -- the more liberal wing of the court -- broke with the majority on most of the key points of the case. The
D.C. Gun Ban Crystal Ball Contest Winners
July 5, 2008 A week before today's Supreme Court decision tossing out Washington's gun ban, some of you still harbored the belief (hope?) that the 32-year-old law would be upheld, some predicted a very narrowly argued opinion getting rid of the ban but otherwise providing little in the way of a path forward on gun issues, and a few got it just right. Our contest here on the big blog brought just about every possible kind of prediction, but the winners--who should contact me by email with your name and street address so that I can ship you your prizes from the Vast Vault of Values--are: "Dean J" for this: "5-4, Roberts, explicitly defining the Second Amendment as enumerating the right of the individual, allowing for reasonable restrictions of carrying concealed weapons." The opinion was in fact written by Justice Antonin Scalia rather than the chief, but otherwise Dean J was spot

Not a Bang, But a Whimper
July 5, 2008 Big news from the Supreme Court today. A 5-4 majority decided to strike down the D.C. gun control law as an unconstitutional violation of Dick Heller's right to bear arms under the 2nd Amendment. I'm going through Justice Antonin Scalia's opinion now, and one thing that leaps out at me is the careful way he limits the scope of the court's decision. He carves out two very important limitations on the 2nd Amendment's firearms right -- exceptions so big that they encompass nearly all gun control in existence today, save those most extreme bans like that in D.C.:
Candidates React: D.C. Gun Ban Struck Down
July 5, 2008Gun rights activists Ariel Sarousi (2nd L) Craig Burgers and Steve Bierfeld (R) of Arlington, Va., react to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on the District of Columbia's gun ban, June 26, 2008 in Washington, D.C. (Getty Images) Updated 12:18 p.m. In reaction to the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the D.C. gun ban, the presumptive presidential candidates issued statements variously praising and parsing the decision. John McCain issued the following statement: Today's decision is a landmark victory for Second Amendment freedom in the United States. For this first time in the history of our Republic, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was and is an individual right as intended by our Founding Fathers. I applaud this decision as well as the overturning of the District of Columbia's ban on handguns and limitations on the ability to use firearms for
